Heritage & Story

Lovie Quarry & Concrete Products was founded in 1941 by James Lovie, father to Bill, and grandfather to todays partners Michael and Mark.

From humble beginnings to large-scale operations across the North East of Scotland, it remains proudly family-owned to this day.

Built on Aberdeenshire roots. Growing through four generations.

Lovie Quarry & Concrete Products began in the early 1940s with James Lovie, a skilled builder working through some of the harshest North East winters. When snow and ice kept him from travelling to site, he turned his hand to precast concrete at home in Cowbog. The results were strong, practical, and quickly in demand among local farmers and builders.

What started as a small, hands-on operation soon became a growing concrete business built on quality, craftsmanship, and a commitment to doing things properly.

From Cowbog to Local Supply: The Early Years

Through the 1950s and 60s, demand for concrete continued to rise. To ensure consistent quality and reliable supply, the family expanded into sand and gravel extraction, followed by hard rock quarrying. This marked a key turning point: the ability to manage materials from source to finished product - a model that remains central to the business today. Investment through the decades brought:

  • larger concrete batching facilities
  • expanded precast moulding
  • a growing fleet of delivery vehicles
  • modern equipment to support construction, farming and civil engineering projects

By supplying both materials and finished concrete products, the business supports a wide range of customers across Aberdeenshire and beyond.

Steady Growth Through Quality and Trust

From the 1970s onwards, Lovie Quarry & Concrete Products became a trusted name for:

  • ready-mix concrete
  • dense concrete blocks
  • precast slabs, steps, lintels, pipes and sills
  • specialist aggregates and washed sands
  • agricultural and commercial concrete products

The growth was steady and organic – driven by reputation, repeat customers and a focus on reinvesting back into the business, the land and the local community.

Sustainability has become a key focus in recent years. In 2022, we became  one of the first quarries in the UK to be certified as Carbon Neutral. A milestone that reflects our long-standing respect for the land we work with. From low-emission plant upgrades to modern batching software, our aim is to lead by example and leave as small a footprint as possible.

Today: Five Quarries. One Family Vision.

Now in its fourth generation, the company is run by James' son Bill, and his two sons, Michael and Mark, supported by a 60-strong team working across multiple sites. Lovie Quarry & Concrete Products now operates:

  • Blackhills Quarry – premium washed sands
  • Cottonhill Quarry – high-quality hard rock
  • Howe o’ Byth Quarry – washed aggregates + precast production
  • Memsie Quarry – ready-mix concrete + precast wall panels
  • Methlick Quarry – local ready-mix, sand & gravel supply
  • Cowbog – head office, block manufacturing & bagging centre

Across all sites, the values remain consistent: local supply, dependable service, and materials that meet the demands of modern construction.

A Heritage That Still Shapes the Future

More than 85 years since James cast his first concrete products in Cowbog, the business continues to grow through:

  • investment in advanced washing technology
  • an in-house precast division producing 130+ products
  • a modern delivery fleet covering North East Scotland and beyond.
  • a commitment to environmental responsibility, including carbon neutrality
  • a focus on long-term, local partnerships

The tools and technology have evolved – but the foundations are the same:
family, craftsmanship and the determination to deliver the best materials possible.
